Freewheel Project
The Freewheel Project is a 501c3 non-profit public charity organization founded by Elite pro Tony Hoffman. The purpose of this organization is to help educate kids of the importance of leading drug and alcohol free lifestyles, while also directing them toward positive outlets such as BMX racing. We want to teach kids to occupy their free time outside of school with activities that benefit there well being and self esteem. The BMX bicycle will be used to create a connection between the Freewheel Project and the youth who participate at the weekly gatherings. Our message is simple, make the right choices, follow the right people and most importantly never give up on your dreams.
Why Freewheel? The Freewheel is a component that is connected to the rear wheel of most bicycles allowing the rider of the bicycle to stop pedaling and the bike still coast forward (Freewheeling). Freewill is the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one’s own discretion.
Tony Hoffman was in prison when the clever name Freewheel Project manifested. In life you have the option to make a choice at your discretion, good or bad. The Freewheel Project wants to connect with the youth using a bicycle and Hoffman wants to share his story and past struggles with everyone to promote sound decision making, drug free lifestyles, hard work and perseverance into the life of every person he encounters.
The Freewheel Project has multiple pathways at reaching the youth and most known to date is Hoffmans weekly gatherings with kids from his local community in Clovis & Fresno California. Hoffman provides bicycles and riding equipment to kids who do not have their own and gives them free lessons at the BMX track on how to ride safely and skillfully. Before participants begin riding Hoffman speaks to the kids about understanding life on a new level using his past experiences as examples to help teach kids and guide them in a direction contrary to his past. Hoffman works with kids who have never pedaled without training wheels, 3 year olds new to the BMX track & the high level expert, NO one is excluded as he would put it.
Hoffman also uses public speaking as an outlet of giving back with the Freewheel Project. His experience ranges from small audiences of 10-20 inside classrooms to 1,000-3000 people filling auditoriums and gymnasiums. Hoffman speaks about his story and struggles that are suited to the audience he encounters in hopes that there will be one person he comes across that gets his message and apply’s his teachings into their own lives.

“It doesn’t matter where you’ve grown up or what your circumstance is in life today. The formula to overcoming obstacles is the same wether you are in the projects of west Fresno or the heart of opportunity in Clovis, CA. It takes belief in oneself to achieve any level of success. Some people feel life will never be fair to them, others feel that life owes them everything and that hard work is not necessary to have a high level of accomplishment. Both ends can lead to the loss of hope and I feel it is my duty as a human to teach every person I encounter that the outcome of their future is in their hands & mind. If it can be dreamed it can be achieved but one must put into action the work required to make dreams a reality. Overcoming drug addiction, homelessness on the street and time in prison took a lot of resilience on my behalf and my desire is that every person see that circumstances hinder you only when you choose to let it hinder you by a negative perception. Dream big, work hard, never give up and believe in yourself more each day and good things will happen.” – THoff “Tony Hoffman”
